Discover the interview of Angélique Ciurléo, Director and Yacht Broker of Abys Yachting, presenting the yacht broker profession and the place of women in this very masculine nautical environment.

8 March, International Women's Rights Day

International Women's Rights Day originated at the beginning of the 20th century, during women's demonstrations in the United States and then in Europe. These courageous women began demonstrating to demand better working conditions and the right to vote. In 1975, the United Nations made 8 March International Women's Day official, encouraging all countries around the world to celebrate women's rights.

Since then, 8 March has been a day of gatherings throughout the world to celebrate victories and rights won, to make women's demands heard and above all to take stock of the situation of women. Despite all the progress made, there is still a lot of inequality between women and men throughout the world. Every year, new movements and initiatives in favour of women appear from associations, companies, committed celebrities... to continue to make things evolve.

At Abys Yachting, we have decided to honour our director Angélique Ciurléo, a company director and yacht broker for over 20 years in the Yachting sector. A very masculine environment, but one that welcomes more and more women each year.

Interview with Angélique Ciurléo, Director of Abys Yachting and yacht broker

COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN A FEW WORDS ?

I am Angélique Ciurléo, Director of ABYS Yachting and I have been working as a yacht broker for 20 years. I left the medical field 22 years ago to pursue my passion, which is sales. I became a broker by developing the company ABYS alongside its President, Victor Sobral, since its creation.

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE ROLE OF A BROKER ?

The role of a broker is to sell boats, new or used. His activity consists of finding boats available on the market in order to offer them for sale, and to find the buyers. You need to have a strong commercial sense and a good knowledge of the boating world. You have to be able to share your passion with your customers, and be open to all types of profiles and nationalities. You have to be available from a family point of view, be able to travel.

BEING A WOMAN IN A MALE ENVIRONMENT ISN'T TOO COMPLICATED ?

No, on the contrary, it's good! Men have respect and more sensitivity towards a woman. It's rewarding. The clientele is mainly male, so it's an advantage, there's not the same power struggle that there can be between men. In our days, women at the head ot their companies are sufficiently represented. Women are put forward more, and valued more. Men are more accommodating and accept female authority.

FINALLY, YOU ARE ALSO THE DIRECTOF OF YOUR OWN COMPANY, DO YOU THINK IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECONCILE A PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND PRIVATE LIFE ?

It is difficult to reconcile the two, and it is necessary to know how to surround oneself well, whether at home or at work, to be able to delegate, to get help.

Angélique Ciurléo, like the rest of the Abys Yachting team, is passionate about her job and this is what has made and continues to make Abys Yachting a success.

Men, women, no difference at Abys Yachting. Women are even well represented in the company as they represent 64% of the salaried workforce. An exemplary company in terms of gender diversity and equality between men and women!
